Carlsbad Cavern is the park’s most important cavern, and also the origin of its name, with a depth of over 1,000 feet and approximately 30 miles of mapped passages.

The Big Room of Carlsbad Cavern is the largest underground chamber in the United States, famous for its unique formations of stalagmites, stalactites, and columns. It is highly accessible, with a variety of tours offered year-round.

The evening flight of Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis mexicana) from the entrance of the cavern is one of the park’s main visitor attractions. Free-tailed bats are a colonial species that feed entirely on insects. The colony at Carlsbad is primarily represented by females who give birth to their young from June through July and then migrate south in October to take advantage of the Mexico gentle winters. But besides the cave tours and the bat flight viewing, Carlsbad Caverns National Park offers a variety of other activities including surface ranger programs, wildlife observations, educational seminars, hiking and backpacking. The Rattlesnake Springs area is perfect for picnicking and bird-watching.

But the park is not all about outdoor activities, exploring the caverns and what nature has to offer in this region. The Visitor Center hosts daily a variety of talks, walks, demonstrations, and slide programs organized by the rangers, all proving to be a reliable source of interesting information for the numerous participants.

The Carlsbad Caverns – Guadalupe Mountains Association operates a large bookstore in the Visitor Center, offering a huge collection of titles on caves, bats and the natural history of the Chihuahuan Desert.
