A favorite destination for those who enjoy spending time outdoors, getting in touch with nature and enjoy its treasures is Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
The park appeared as a necessity to preserve Carlsbad Cavern and numerous other caves located in a Permian-age fossil reef. The park contains 83 separate caves, including the nation’s deepest limestone cave, with a depth of 1,597 feet, also classified on the third place for its length.
Carlsbad Cavern is the park’s most important cavern, and also the origin of its name, with a depth of over 1,000 feet and approximately 30 miles of mapped passages.
The Big Room of Carlsbad Cavern is the largest underground chamber in the United States, famous for its unique formations of stalagmites, stalactites, and columns. It is highly accessible, with a variety of tours offered year-round.
The evening flight of Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis mexicana) from the entrance of the cavern is one of the park’s main visitor attractions. Free-tailed bats are a colonial species that feed entirely on insects. The colony at Carlsbad is primarily represented by females who give birth to their young from June through July and then migrate south in October to take advantage of the Mexico gentle winters. But besides the cave tours and the bat flight viewing, Carlsbad Caverns National Park offers a variety of other activities including surface ranger programs, wildlife observations, educational seminars, hiking and backpacking. The Rattlesnake Springs area is perfect for picnicking and bird-watching.
But the park is not all about outdoor activities, exploring the caverns and what nature has to offer in this region. The Visitor Center hosts daily a variety of talks, walks, demonstrations, and slide programs organized by the rangers, all proving to be a reliable source of interesting information for the numerous participants.
The Carlsbad Caverns – Guadalupe Mountains Association operates a large bookstore in the Visitor Center, offering a huge collection of titles on caves, bats and the natural history of the Chihuahuan Desert. Visitors can enjoy the benefits of an Information center, captivating exhibits on bats, geology, history, and Lechuguilla Cave. An outdoor nature trail and picnic sites near the Visitor Center and at Rattlesnake Springs are also accessible.
Another pleasant experience for people of all ages and occupations is a visit to the Carlsbad Cavern Gift Shop&Restaurant, also housed in the newly refurnished Visitor’s Center, right above the cavern.
If the success of the restaurant is guaranteed by the amount of time people spend outdoors, the fresh air and the appetite brought by the long walks, the gift shop offers items carefully selected to enhance every experience at the Carlsbad Cavern and the surrounding area and to make the memories related to it last forever. You will find cave and geology related items, gifts inspired by the surrounding desert, and authentic Native American handcrafts.
For the visitors of the National Park system who appreciate regional products, the regional merchandise ranges from food products to pot holders and dog leashes. The geology toys and kits will be well appreciated both by adults and children, while the regional food products will be a great source of inspiration for future recipes, bringing new scents and flavors into your home kitchen. There is no need to describe the souvenirs, taking into account that they are as unique as everything else in the park. The T-shirts, mugs and caps will go great with the breathtaking prints of Carlsbad Cavern, providing pleasant memories long after you return home, and even thoughtful gifts for friends and family.
Great memories come with great souvenirs, don’t you agree?
